Return-to-Work Programs
Physically ready and emotionally ready — both matter.
Why We Look at Both
Most return-to-work programs measure one thing: physical capacity. But an employee who is physically cleared and still carrying unaddressed anxiety or sleep disruption from the accident is not actually ready, and is at real risk of a setback shortly after returning. Our return-to-work process accounts for both.
How We Build Your Return-to-Work Plan
- A functional assessment of your job's physical demands
- Clear, specific work restrictions based on your physical therapy progress
- A check on emotional readiness and any ongoing behavioral health needs
- Coordination with any other provider involved in your care
Stages of a Typical Return-to-Work Progression
- Initial restriction phase — protecting the injury while beginning treatment
- Modified duty phase — returning with specific restrictions as function and stability improve
- Progressive duty phase — restrictions gradually lifted as capacity and confidence rebuild
- Full duty release — physically and psychologically ready for the complete demands of the job
Why We Don't Rush This Process
A return that happens before someone is genuinely ready — physically or emotionally — is one of the more common causes of a repeat injury or a stalled claim. We use functional and clinical benchmarks across all disciplines involved, not just pain levels or calendar time, to determine when each stage is appropriate.
Coordinating With Your Employer
We communicate specific, functional restrictions directly to your employer and update them as your recovery progresses, so modified duty planning is based on where you actually are.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I feel physically ready but still anxious about returning?
That's worth discussing directly — it's common after a workplace accident, and it's part of what we assess before confirming full readiness, not something to push through alone.
Do you evaluate whether pain medication affects my readiness to return?
We don't manage physical pain medication ourselves, but we'll coordinate with whoever is prescribing it. If anxiety, PTSD, or depression medication from our psychiatry team is part of your care, that's factored directly into your readiness assessment.
What if my employer doesn't have modified duty available?
We'll provide clear restrictions regardless, and can discuss your options if it isn't available.
Full recovery means a return that actually holds — physically and emotionally. That's the standard we build every plan around.
