Substance Abuse Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment, paired with real counseling — not one or the other.

Why We Pair MAT With Counseling

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is one of the most effective, evidence-based tools available for treating opioid and alcohol use disorder. It reduces cravings, prevents withdrawal, and lowers the risk of overdose and relapse. But medication alone treats the physical dependency — it doesn't address the behaviors, thought patterns, and life circumstances that fed the addiction in the first place.

That's why our program centers on both together. Every patient on MAT at Mojave is also connected to appropriate counseling — individual, group, or both, depending on need — because sustainable recovery requires treating the whole person, not just the chemistry.

What We Provide

Who This Is For

We treat adults struggling with opioid addiction (including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers), alcohol use disorder, and other substance use concerns, including patients managing co-occurring mental health conditions or a history of trauma alongside their addiction.

How Treatment Begins

Every patient starts with a full evaluation — medical, psychiatric, and substance use history — so treatment is built around your specific situation rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. From there, we build a plan that may include medication, counseling, primary care, and psychiatric support, coordinated as one program rather than referred out piecemeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medication-assisted treatment just replacing one drug with another?

No — this is a common misconception. MAT medications work differently than the substances they're used to treat, stabilizing brain chemistry without producing the same high, which is what allows patients to function normally and engage fully in recovery.

Do I have to do counseling if I'm on MAT?

We strongly recommend it and build it into your plan, because medication alone treats the physical dependency but not the behavioral and psychological side of addiction. Sustainable recovery is far more likely with both.

Is treatment confidential?

Yes — substance use treatment records carry additional federal privacy protections beyond standard medical records. We can walk you through exactly what that means for your situation.
