Neck Pain
Rarely just a neck problem.
Understanding This Condition
Neck pain is rarely isolated to the neck. The cervical spine is the top of a chain that runs through the upper back, shoulders, and into the arms — and dysfunction anywhere in that chain places excessive load on the neck. Forward head posture, restricted thoracic mobility, and whiplash-type trauma are among the most common contributors we see.
What Causes It
- Forward head posture from screen and phone use
- Restricted thoracic spine mobility
- Weak deep neck stabilizing muscles
- Whiplash or other acute trauma, including car accidents
- Sustained desk or driving posture
Signs & Symptoms
- Stiffness and reduced rotation or side-bending
- Headaches originating at the base of the skull
- Tension across the upper back and shoulders
- Tingling, numbness, or weakness radiating into the arm
- Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting or screen use
How We Evaluate It
We assess the neck, upper back, and shoulder girdle as one connected system, screening for nerve involvement into the arms and evaluating posture and movement habits that may be driving the pattern.
Our Treatment Approach
We treat the full region together, because a neck problem sourced in the thoracic spine or shoulders won't resolve by treating the neck alone.
- Manual therapy and joint mobilization to restore motion
- Postural correction targeted at the actual drivers
- Strengthening the deep neck stabilizers that most programs skip entirely
- Thoracic mobility work to take pressure off the cervical spine
What to Expect
Most patients notice improved range of motion and reduced tension within the first few visits, with lasting change taking longer as postural habits are retrained.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my neck pain from my posture or from an old injury?
Often both contribute — we evaluate your full history and current mechanics to determine what's actually driving the pattern.
Can neck pain really cause headaches?
Yes — cervicogenic headaches, referred from neck dysfunction, are extremely common.
Do I need to stop using my phone or computer?
Not entirely, but how you use them matters — we give specific, practical adjustments rather than a blanket restriction.
A neck that's strong and mobile through its full range handles the demands of daily life without complaint — that's the goal, not just quiet in the moment.
