Knee Pain
The full picture — meniscus, arthritis, and everything above and below.
Understanding This Condition
Knee pain is one of the most frustrating conditions because it interferes with nearly everything. The reality is that most knee pain is functional — caused by how the knee moves within the chain of the hips, low back, and ankles. Even when tissue damage like a meniscus tear or arthritis is present, restoring proper movement is almost always key to lasting recovery.
What Causes It
- Weak or poorly activated glute musculature
- Limited ankle mobility shifting load upward
- Quad and hamstring imbalances
- Meniscus or cartilage wear from altered mechanics
- Injury from an accident, fall, or sports activity
Signs & Symptoms
- Pain going up or down stairs
- Swelling after activity
- A sense of instability or the knee giving way
- Pain or clicking with squatting or kneeling
- Stiffness after sitting for extended periods
How We Evaluate It
We assess the full hip-knee-ankle chain — glute strength and activation, ankle mobility, and movement quality during functional tasks — to identify where the knee's support system is breaking down.
Our Treatment Approach
Even when tissue damage is present, restoring proper movement through rehabilitation is almost always the key to lasting recovery.
- Glute and hip strengthening to reduce excess load on the knee
- Correcting quad and hamstring imbalances
- Ankle mobility work to restore proper force distribution
- Progressive movement retraining for stairs, squatting, and daily demands
What to Expect
Functional knee pain typically responds well within four to eight weeks of consistent, targeted work.
Frequently Asked Questions
I have a meniscus tear on my MRI — do I need surgery?
Not necessarily — many meniscus tears, especially degenerative ones, respond well to a structured rehabilitation program without surgical intervention.
Is running bad for my knees?
Not inherently — running with poor hip and ankle mechanics is what tends to overload the knee. Fix the mechanics and running is usually fine.
What if my knee pain is from a car accident?
We treat accident-related knee injuries with the same thorough evaluation, coordinated with your personal injury or workers' compensation claim as needed.
A knee is only as good as the chain it sits in. Rebuild the hip and ankle mechanics around it, and the knee usually stops being the problem.
